Why this exists

The work is done. The language is the wall.

A finished video, a live screen, a conversation — each needs a different kind of translation. Translator keeps them in one place instead of three services.

Screen

What it looks like.

This is a development build, captured in a development view of the desktop app.

A screenshot of APOUL Translator: a drop area for video, Japanese to English selection, audio and subtitle toggles, and four modes — video, screen and games, conversation, text.
What it does

What it does.

01

English audio and subtitles for a Japanese video

The centre of the app. Text can also be read out of subtitles burned into the video.

02

Fits the original timing

English runs longer than Japanese. Rather than speeding up the voice, the translation is shortened to fit; you can compare each line against the original length.

03

Music and effects stay

Only the original voice is lowered and the English voice laid over it, so game sound and music remain.

04

Screen and games

Translates what is on screen, either direction between Japanese and English, and can keep translated subtitles on top of a game, transparent and click-through.

05

Speech

Translates your microphone and the audio playing on your PC; direction selectable.

06

Subtitle files

Extracts subtitles from a video, translates them and writes SRT, VTT or ASS — Japanese, English or both.

07

Glossary

Register terms to keep translations consistent; you are warned when one comes out wrong.

When you would use it

Situations, not features.

Publishing to a wider audience

Give a Japanese video an English track.

Playing a game in another language

Read the screen as you go.

Following spoken audio

Translate a microphone or what is playing on the PC as you listen.

Handing subtitles to an editor

Standard subtitle formats.

How it goes

The basic flow.

You should be able to guess the next step without reading a manual.

  1. 1
    Load the video

Choose a video recorded in Japanese.

  2. 2
    Extract and translate

Pull out what is said and translate it to English; the glossary keeps terms consistent.

  3. 3
    Write audio and subtitles

Output the English voice track and the subtitle file.

Data and trust

Described once it is settled.

Where translation is processed, whether anything is sent externally and whether anything is stored will be described here at release.
